All of these eggs look alike. Don't you wish you could see what's inside before you take your
pick? People are like that too. You can't tell what a person is like inside by just looking at the
outside. There's a story in the Old Testament that tells about that.
God told Samuel to go to Jesse's house and select one of his sons to be the king of Israel. When
Samuel saw the oldest son, Eliab, he thought "He's tall and strong - he looks like he'd be a good
king."
But God told Samuel that Eliab was not the right person. He said "Man looks on the outward
appearance, but God looks on the heart."
He knew that Eliab's little brother David had a heart that loved and trusted God, and that was
what he was looking for.
But we can learn something about a person's heart by the way he behaves. The Bible says that
anyone who hears and obeys God's word has a good, solid foundation, but the person who can't
decide who to trust is unstable in everything he does.
You'll be glad to know that this is true of eggs, too. We can find the hard boiled egg by its
behavior. Put the egg on a hard flat surface and give it a spin. (You may want to put the egg on
a plate to spin it.) If it's solid, it will keep on
spinning for awhile, but if it's raw, is stops real quick. (have the volunteer spin the eggs until
he finds the right one) The raw egg is like the person who isn't trusting completely in God.
It's unstable, and can't keep going. But the solid egg is like the Christian who knows that he can
always trust in God, and lives by His commands.
